Charity rallies: Overland 2 Oz
Fiona Easterby announces “Charity Rallies” most ambitious project to date. Raising money for the charity “No More Landmines”, entrants will drive through up to 29 countries, visiting mine clearance projects en-route. Setting out from London, the group will cross from Europe to Asia at Istanbul, into Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India where they will witness one of the longest solar eclipses ever seen from the holy city of Varanasi. Heading north after the great sun hiding, the vehicles will tackle the Himalayas in Nepal and Tibet. Turning south again Vietnam offers the chance to visit a “No More Landmines” survivor assistance programme. In neighbouring Cambodia they will see one of the larger minefields being cleared, close to the Angkor Watt temple complex. Making time for the obligatory “One night in Bangkok” teams continue from Thailand down the Malay peninsula. Local ferries will carry them through the Indonesian islands to East Timor where cars will have to be thoroughly cleaned before being shipped to Darwin and the final leg of their journey through Australia. The ideal vehicle for this venture is, no doubt a sturdy, reliable 4x4 but where’s the challenge in that? Most teams are choosing to take something a little more quirky! VW Beetles are a popular choice, as is the humble 2CV. The idea is to take a vehicle that will create a talking point with locals, offering the opportunity to harvest new friendships internationally.
